. . . News Flash . . .

On October 15, 2008, Alltel Wireless sponsored a live performance of the Latin Pop Rock band "Reik" at the Miracle League field in Ponder Park. The Alltel employees came out by the hundreds to buddy with our players, Young Guns and Rockies, cheered and helped out in any way. The band Reik sang two songs, danced with our players, Regina Pitts, Alejandra Salomon and Christian Licon, played baseball and presented the League with an autographed guitar for a future auction. Alltel presented the League with a $10,000 donation and a lot of goodies for players, families, and volunteers. On November 2, 2008, Alltel sponsored the downtown festival for Dia de Los Muertos featuring Reik and Ha*Ash presenting VIP passes to some of our players' families and volunteers with passes to the after party at the Plaza Theatre. The League is grateful to the generosity of Alltel and their employees. If your organization would like to help with fundraising please contact our Director Sandie Sparks-Olivar. Her contact information appears to the right on this page.

And of course... there's baseball.

There is something about playing the game that lights up a youngster's eyes. But for children facing serious physical and mental disabilities, that opportunity can often be difficult to achieve. Baseball diamonds weren't exactly designed with wheelchairs and crutches in mind.

The Miracle League removes the barriers which keep mentally and physically disabled children off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America's favorite pastime. Since the main barriers for these children arise from the natural grass fields used in conventional youth leagues. Miracle League teams play on a custom-designed, synthetic turf field which accommodates wheelchairs and other assistive devices while helping prevent injuries. Each community's goal is to raise the funds necessary to complete a Miracle League field.

But it's more than playing a game. The Miracle League is about making new friends, building self-esteem and being treated just like other kids. To help the athletes, the Miracle League uses a "buddy" system -- pairing each player with an able bodied peer. The resultant bond is beyond imagination.

The Miracle League of El Paso serves children ages 3 on up who suffer from any physical or mental disabilities, which causes them to be excluded -- whether intentionally or not -- from conventional youth baseball leagues. Our program reaches children from El Paso County and surrounding areas. The children registering in the league are never turned away regardless of their ability to play or pay the $35 registration fee. In most cases, families with children having disabilities have enough trouble making ends meet on a daily basis. Playing baseball is a great diversion for the children and their families. We don't worry about the fees, there are always generous people who pay the fee on behalf of the child. We have set up a scholarship fund to help those children. Of the 200 children registered after three seasons, half are sponsored.

Thirty five dollars hardly covers the cost of a uniform, trophy at the end of the seasons and supplemental insurance. Our players may not be able to run the bases or hit the ball as well as their healthy peers, but they have an incredible amount of determination to play baseball. We want to help them achieve that dream.

Our Organization is now recruiting coaches, buddies and players for all seasons.
